Who gel nails work well for
Gel is not automatically right for everyone. These are the situations where it clearly is.
You swim, boat or garden regularly
Chlorine, salt water and soil finish regular lacquer in about three days. Cured gel is chemically resistant and does not soften in water, so it survives a week at the beach.
You cannot sit still for a dry time
With children, a job to get back to or a flight to catch, air-drying lacquer is a losing proposition. Gel is fully hard the moment it leaves the lamp.
Your natural nails are healthy but soft
A gel overlay adds a thin layer of rigidity that stops a soft nail bending and tearing at the tip. It is not an extension, but for nails that bend rather than break it acts as a splint.
You want colour that stays true

Gel over natural nails versus gel over an enhancement
Gel polish applied over your own nails is one price. Gel applied over acrylic, dip or extensions is part of that larger service and is quoted with it. The two are often confused when people compare prices between salons.
Removal of existing gel
Soaking off an existing set properly takes ten to twenty minutes of chair time and is charged for. Removal of a set applied elsewhere sometimes takes longer, particularly if a very hard builder gel or a no-wipe top coat was used, because we work slowly to avoid filing into the natural nail.
Colour and finish complexity
A single solid shade is straightforward. French tips, ombré fades, chrome and cat-eye finishes each require additional technique and curing steps. Sheer nudes and whites often need three coats rather than two for full opacity, which also adds time.
Nail art

Repair or reinforcement
If a nail is cracked or has a weak spot, a fibreglass or gel reinforcement can be built into the base layer. That is additional work, and it is worth asking about if you are constantly losing the same nail.
Does gel polish damage your natural nails?
Cured gel sitting on a nail does nothing to it. Essentially all the damage people blame on gel comes from over-filing during prep or removal, or from peeling it off, which takes the top layers of the plate with it. Proper removal is a ten to fifteen minute acetone soak-off — no scraping, no prying.

Gel Nails — frequently asked questions
How long do gel nails last?
Two to three weeks for most people. You will see growth at the cuticle before you see any chipping. Swimmers, gardeners and anyone using strong cleaning products regularly land at the shorter end; office work and gloves for chores push you to the longer end.
What is the difference between gel polish and shellac?
Shellac is a brand name for a particular gel-lacquer hybrid, not a separate category. Functionally it behaves like other gel polishes: it cures under lamp, wears two to three weeks and removes by acetone soak-off. Any salon offering gel polish is offering the same class of product.
Can you remove gel from another salon?
Yes, and it is a common request. Tell us when you book so we can allow extra time. Sets finished with a very hard top coat or a builder gel base take longer to break down, and we would rather soak twice than file into your natural nail to save five minutes.
Can gel polish go on toenails?
Yes, and it performs even better there. Toenails grow more slowly and take less impact than fingernails, so gel on toes commonly holds four to six weeks. It is the single best option before a holiday or a cruise out of Tampa.
Is the curing lamp safe?
LED curing lamps expose your hands to a small amount of UVA for roughly 30 to 60 seconds per coat. If that concerns you, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the backs of your hands before your appointment or ask for fingerless UV gloves. We will happily accommodate either.
