Nail extensions add length to your natural nail using a tip or form, then reinforce it with gel. At L.A Nails in South Bradenton we offer soft gel extensions applied with full-coverage tips, hard and builder gel over forms, and traditional tip-and-overlay work. A full set takes about 90 minutes and lasts three to four weeks before it needs a fill or rebalance.
Extensions and acrylic get talked about as if they were the same thing, and they are not. An extension is any service that makes your nail longer than it grew; acrylic is one material used to do it. Gel systems reach the same length with a different feel: soft gel has a little give, so instead of the sharp snap acrylic can produce it tends to bend and recover.

You want length but hate the weight of acrylic
Soft gel full-coverage tips are noticeably lighter and thinner than a sculpted acrylic set at the same length. If acrylic felt heavy or your nail beds ached for a day, start here.
Your natural nails are thin or over-filed
Full-coverage tips bond across the whole plate rather than at a small contact point, so they need less surface prep — less buffing on a nail that cannot afford it.
You want a dramatic shape
Long coffin, stiletto and lipstick shapes are extension territory. Up to medium-long, soft gel handles it. Beyond that, hard gel or acrylic gives the structural depth to keep it intact.
You dread the removal appointment
Soft gel soaks off in roughly fifteen minutes with minimal filing. Hard gel and acrylic must be filed down substantially first. If past removals were long and uncomfortable, this changes it.
How a gel extension set is applied
This is the application for full-coverage soft gel tips, our most requested extension system.
Sizing every tip individually
Each of the ten tips is matched to the width of that specific nail bed first. A tip slightly too narrow leaves the sidewall exposed and lifts there. This is the most important stage.
Prep, dehydrate and prime
Cuticles pushed back, shine lightly buffed, plate dehydrated and primed. Compared with a tip-and-acrylic set this is light prep — we are creating adhesion, not filing the nail down.
Gel adhesive and fitting under lamp
Adhesive gel goes into the tip and onto the nail, the tip is seated at the correct angle and flash-cured in position. Set too flat and the extension points at the floor.
Building structure and apex
A layer of builder gel creates the apex and reinforces the join between natural nail and tip. This is what separates a set that lasts a month from one that pops off in a week.
Shape, refine and finish
Filed to length and shape, surface refined, gel colour or art applied and cured, then a top coat seals it. You leave with a fully hard set and no dry time.
What affects the price of nail extensions
Extension pricing tracks length, system and finish. Tell us those three things and we can quote accurately.
Length
Short and medium sets use less material, less builder gel and less filing time. Long and extra-long sets need more structure to survive and take considerably longer to shape and balance. This is the largest single variable.
System — soft gel, hard gel or builder gel over forms
Full-coverage soft gel tips are the fastest system. Hard gel or builder gel sculpted over a paper form is slower, more technical, and produces a stronger set. Sculpting on forms sits at the top of the range for good reason.
Fill or rebalance versus a new set
At three to four weeks, extensions are filled at the regrowth area and the apex is rebalanced. That is meaningfully cheaper than a new set. If you have gone six weeks or the set has lifted at several nails, replacing is usually the better value.
Removal of an existing set
Soaking off soft gel takes about fifteen minutes. Removing acrylic or hard gel takes longer because the bulk must be filed down first. Removal from another salon can take longer again if we cannot tell what product was used until we start.
Colour and art
A single gel shade is included in the set price band. Ombré, chrome, French tips, encapsulated designs and hand-painted art are priced per nail on top. Longer nails also present more surface area, so the same design costs more on a long set.
Extensions, acrylic or dip — which should you actually book?
Ask three questions in order. Do you need length? If your nails are already long enough and just keep breaking, you want dip powder or a gel overlay. How hard are you on your hands? Manual work points to acrylic, office and household life to soft gel. And how long will you wear them?

- Files, buffers and toe separators are single-use and disposed of after every client.
- Metal implements are cleaned and sterilised between uses.
- Pedicure basins are drained, scrubbed and disinfected between every client.
- Dip powder is poured into a clean tray per client — never a shared jar.
- Cuticles are pushed back, not aggressively cut. Only dead tissue and hangnails are removed.
- Gel, dip and acrylic are removed by acetone soak-off, never scraped or pried off.

Nail Extensions — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gel extensions and acrylic nails?
Both add length. Gel extensions use a pre-shaped tip or a form with gel product cured under lamp, and are lighter and more flexible. Acrylic is sculpted from liquid and powder and is harder and more impact-resistant. Gel removes faster; acrylic survives rougher use.
How long do nail extensions last?
Three to four weeks before a fill or rebalance. The extension itself can be worn continuously for months with regular maintenance — what changes at the three-to-four-week mark is the regrowth gap at the cuticle and the position of the apex.
Do gel extensions damage your natural nails?
Not when they are applied with light prep and removed by soak-off. Because full-coverage gel tips bond across the whole plate, they typically need less buffing than a tip-and-acrylic application. The damage risk comes from prying them off, never from wearing them.
Can I get extensions if my nails are very short or bitten?
Usually yes, as long as there is enough free edge for a tip to seat against and the skin is not broken or inflamed. Very short bitten nails sometimes do better with a shorter first set to let the nail bed adjust. We will tell you honestly at the consultation.
What length should I start with?
Shorter than you think. Most first-time clients ask for long and come back for a shorter fill because typing, buttons and contact lenses are harder than expected. Start medium, live with it for a cycle, and go longer at the next fill if you want more.
